Job Summary
Welcomes Library visitors; provides courteous and friendly assistance on using the Library and Library technology to people of all ages and from a variety of backgrounds, cultures, and experiences. Performs computer-based tasks related to loaning Library materials; maintains patron borrowing records; regularly communicates, both verbally and in writing, with staff and the public.

Supervision Received
A Library Department Head oversees training and supervision, and continues to provide instruction and support. After initial learning period, performs regular duties without close supervision. Refers unusual problems or policy decisions to supervisor.

The employee is responsible for their own work, but may be expected to help train others and provide occasional assistance to lower level, new, or part-time employees, as directed by the supervisor.
Major Duties
1. Provides customerservice, giving basic information and directions. Answers questions on the use of the Library and available services. Refers questions requiring further research, decision-making, or time to the appropriate persons.
2. Charges and discharges materials using computer system. Checks accuracy of all dates and numbers. Reviews patron accounts for long overdue items and unpaid bills and takes appropriate action. Renews patron library cards. Updates contact information on patron library accounts. Sets-up Circulation Desk for daily activity
3. Explains the Library’s borrowing policies and exercises judgement to offer flexibility on a case-by-case basis to help patrons improve their Library experience. Searches for requested and reserved materials on computer database and shelves for individuals, teachers, class projects, and other libraries. Identifies lending libraries for requested materials. Maintains records on status of requests and notifies patrons when items are available. Prepares statistical reports. Refers special cases to supervisor.
4. Answers incoming calls and routes callers or provides information, as required. Assists patrons who present a wide range of physical and communication abilities. Refers questions on other special services to appropriate person.
5. Provides basic information on the use of the computer catalog. Directs patrons to locations of various collections. Advises on reading materials, referring questions requiring more in-depth research and time to supervisor or Reference Department.
6. Sorts returned materials by classification and by library. Returns to shelves accurately in specific sequence or prepares for statewide delivery routing. Examines materials for physical damage and takes appropriated action. May be asked to help evaluate and withdraw library materials under the supervision of staff responsible for library collections.
7. Registers new borrowers. Reviews application form for completeness, accuracy, and appropriate identification. Verifies signatures. Enters and updates information on computer database.
8. Collects money and bank checks, and makes change. Instructs patrons on payment options for lost and damaged library materials. Collects and records payments for lost or damaged library materials. Collects money for items sold from the Library’s book sale area and for Library merchandise.
9. Receives magazines and keeps track of their arrival in a computerized database. Processes magazines for circulation.
10. Assists in preparation of book displays, flyers, exhibits, and posters.
11. Assists in training new hourly workers as assigned by supervisor. Responsible for desk operations in absence of supervisor. Works on special projects and substitutes in other departments in an emergency, as assigned.
12. Maintains Library security. Advises patrons on building regulations and alerts the appropriate staff person or authorities to disruptive public behavior. Secures the building and closes the Library, as needed, clearing people according to established procedures.
13. May be asked to serve on staff committees. Works on special projects and may be asked to work in other library departments as assigned.
Desired Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from high school or GED equivalent. Working knowledge of computer operation; general knowledge or interest in literature. Skill in operation of listed equipment. Ability to pay close attention to detail, and work with alphabetical and numeric organization. Ability to effectively deliver customer service in a friendly courteous manner; Ability to communicate effectively verbally in person and over the telephone, and in writing; Ability to work with all ages and with people from a variety of backgrounds, cultures, and experiences; Experience handling money and calculating change; Is prepared to encounter challenging interactions and is willing to learn from them and seek out solutions with the help of supervisors and colleagues.
