Crew Leader Position Description:
The Ecological Crew Leader (CL) is responsible for managing the Mariposa Installation Crew and overseeing the successful delivery of our garden installation projects with the support of the Project Manager and Designer. The Crew Leader will work to ensure projects are delivered to Mariposa standards of excellence in craftsmanship while prioritizing safety, timeliness, and adherence to the given budget and design.
The Crew Leader Job Role includes the following:
- Oversee the Daily Construction Process of Our Garden Installations
- Oversee the Installation Crew(s)
- Oversee the Care of All Tools and Equipment for the Installation Department
- Conduct Client Communication
- Administration and Organization
- Site assessments + measuring
- Set Project Schedule for crew + orders and deliveries
- Set daily and weekly schedule for crew
- Give weekly progress reports to manager meetings and clients
- Training
- Conduct technical training on the subjects listed in the Technical Skills section.
- Technical Skills: The Crew Leader must have experience and skills in the following areas:
- Irrigation
- Design the system, build the manifold, and document irrigation lines/layout.
- Flagstone Setting
- Lead a team to put in finished flagstone and know how to properly cut stone, can build a simple wall.
- Grading
- Hand grading to move water away from the house foundation
- Carpentry
- Build raised beds/fences with ecologically sourced woods.
- Mobilize And Organize Job Sites
- Establish where all tools and deliveries go and keep them organized throughout the project.
- Open and Close Site
- Open and close the site every day to ensure there is an organized workflow.
- Make sure the tools are secure and protected from the weather, make sure there are no dangerous obstacles that our clients may encounter, and make sure the site is clean and tidied up at the end of the day.
- Team Leadership
- Guide the team on tasks related to the installation.
- Know who and how many and how long each person should be working on tasks.
- Build team morale and keep the team motivated.
- Plant Health
- Take care of plants from the time they are delivered to the site until they are installed.
- Trouble Shooting
- Demonstrate the ability to fix and prioritize unexpected problems in the field.
- Mariposa Ecological Standards
- Keep the ecological aspect of Mariposa at the heart of all installations.
- OSHA
- Demonstrate knowledge of OSHA and enforce rules and regulations to keep the Jobsite safe, healthy, and clean. Lead weekly “tailgate” safety meetings.
- Diversity Training
- Be able to lead diversity training skills and hold a safe workspace devoid of sexual harassment, harassment, bigotry or racism.
Qualifications

- Valid CA drivers license
- 3+ years Crew Leading experience

Assistant Designer/Ecological Crew Member Position Description:
The Assistant Designer works under the supervision of the Lead Designer to support the Design Team through the design process which includes 4 phases (Site assessment and basemap creation, Concepts, Final Design, and Construction Documents). The assistant designer will spend the first year also working as an Ecological Crew Member to become more acquainted with Mariposa’s construction methods (please see the Ecological Crew Member job description for further clarification on Crew Member duties). The anticipated schedule is as follows and will be re-evaluated after each review:
Anticipated Schedule (30-40 hours per week):
- 1-3 months: 95% install, 5% design (weekly check in with design team)
- 1 month review
- 3 month review
- 3-6 months: 75% install, 25% design
- 6 month review
- 6-12 months: 50% install, 50% design
- 12 months +: Full time design, possibility to move into designer position
- 12 months review
Design Assistant Tasks:
- Follow schedule laid out by the Lead Designer
- Attend site assessments with the Lead Designer and Project Manager
- Collect site measurements, site photos and videos
- Ensure site data collected at the site assessment is filed in the appropriate folders
- Digitize site plans using SketchUp to translate measurements into a basemap
- Finalize basemaps using the Mariposa template.
- Work with the Design Team to ensure that the final, to scale and complete set of detailed basemaps are in the appropriate folder.
- Keep all client information up-to-date and organized
- Ensure client dossiers are updated with relevant project updates
- Label, render and add dimensions to final plans, sections, and details
- Make sure final construction documents and design are to scale.
- Print and laminate construction documents as needed
- Populating and updating our design standards and templates
- Organize and populate the Mariposa Photos folder
- Updating the digital and hardcopy portfolios/marketing materials
- Outlining concepts and final plans in SketchUp to get the square footages of design features (used for bidding)
- Attend design meetings and take notes and fill out the design calendar
- Researching permitting and code questions as they come up
- Design invoicing
- Sending out design agreements
- Visiting gardens during garden care visits with one of the primary designers
- Attend pre-construction meetings, take notes and save to the Drive
- Upload relevant photos and info from Slack to the Drive
Qualifications:
- Landscape Design Experience
- Training and experience in Google Suite, Excel, Sketchup and Layout
- Good communication skills
- Good organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to follow directions and stay on task
- Ability to be a team player
- Gardening and maintenance experience (a plus)
- Degree in Landscape Design or Landscape Architecture or currently in school (a plus)
Ecological Landscape Installer (Full Time)
$20-28/hr D.O.E.
The ideal candidate has skills and expertise in handling and operating tools and machinery required in the construction phase. Physical fitness and agility is key as this position requires carrying heavy materials and equipment almost on a daily basis.
- Implement the Build-Out of Our Gardens
- Perform a variety of physical tasks involving labor in construction projects, perform manual work in stone work such as flagstone patios and pathways, dry stacked stone walls, irrigation, and landscaping. This could include:
- Shoveling, trenching, excavating and backfilling trenches and ditches; compacting and leveling earth to grade specifications, using picks, shovels, pneumatic tampers, and rakes
- Drip Irrigation layout
- Sheet Mulching
- Planting
- Driving trucks to carry materials and equipment from office to sites
- Loading and unloading materials and equipment from trucks
- Erecting and dismantling temporary structures
- Prepare sites to ensure optimization of construction work procedures
- Bring all necessary tools, equipment, and material on site and set up as required
- Assure all the necessary safety equipment for the job is present and in working order before proceeding with work
- Conduct Job Site Clean Up
- Clean construction sites of debris, trash, and hazardous materials.
- Pick up all tools, equipment and materials and secure job site each day in order to eliminate potential hazards
- Perform Other Tasks as Required by The Project/Site with Safety as a Top Priority
- Be able to read and interpret construction plans
- Use hand tools to cut and shape material as per instructions
- Measure, mark, and record openings and distances to lay out areas where construction work will be performed
- Carry out proper material handling and storage
- Carry out all proper construction and installation methods necessary for the safe and successful completion of the project
- Clean and maintain construction equipment appropriately
- Ensure that all work is being done in compliance with the company’s protocols
- Ensure that proper safety and incident reporting procedures are followed and bring issues to the immediate attention of the Project Manager or Crew Leader
- Comply with all local building codes, labor, and safety laws during construction
- Maintain positive relationships with clients, subcontractors, and team member
Must have:
- 6 months or more of field/construction experience preferred
- Valid California driver's license and be insurable by company insurance carriers
- The ability to consistently carry 50 lbs on a semi-regular basis in order to fulfill the demands of the position
Strongly preferred:
- OSHA safety certified, First AID and CPR certified preferred
- GED + Vocational training or more desired
