Summary

Spire is seeking a Corporate Development Intern to support projects that will contribute to long term earnings growth. This position provides unique experience through exposure to strategic initiatives (including renewable energy) and is highly visible to the senior management team. This intern will assist in valuation analyses, preparing presentations for potential investments or strategic initiatives, conducting industry or investment target research, as well as assisting with corporate strategic execution across Spire.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist in preparing financial analyses, valuation, business cases, and pro-forma financials for existing businesses and potential new businesses and services
  • Assist on M&A projects, including valuation, due diligence, process management, etc.
  • Assist in preparing recommendations and making presentations for potential acquisitions, investments, and other strategic initiatives to the senior management team
  • Assist in the strategic planning and long-term financial planning processes for Spire and its units
  • Help refine analytical frameworks, models, tools, etc. to support Spire's strategic planning and corporate development efforts, including:
  • Conducting industry value chain, competitive, and strategic analyses
  • Preparing capital markets, and M&A market and transaction analyses
  • Conducting high level and detailed analyses of targets

Essential Characteristics and Competencies

  • Strategic thinking and awareness of business and financial concepts, principles, and practices
  • Comfortable with abstract concepts and complex issues, and demonstrated intellectual curiosity
  • Interest in the gas industry (i.e., utility, midstream and upstream) and Spire in general
  • Analytical mind and ability to synthesize information from a variety of sources
  • Proven track record of persistence, sound judgement, and ability to work effectively within a dynamic work setting
  • Ability to work independently, manage time effectively and multitask while remaining committed to quality and timeliness of work product
  • Proven team player that invites input, shares ownership, consistently shares in required efforts, especially under challenging deadlines, and shares credit with other team members
  • Good written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills

Required Education (certifications, licenses)

  • Currently enrolled as a full-time student and will be a Junior, Senior, or master’s level student in Fall 2023
  • Current major in Accounting or Finance or Economics
  • Cumulative GPA 3.0 or above

Required knowledge, skill and abilities

  • Core finance, accounting and economics classes
  • Working understanding of discounted cash flows and other valuation techniques is a strong plus
  • Advanced capabilities using Excel, PowerPoint and Word preferred

Physical demands, environment and schedule

  • Normal work environment - work is normally performed in a shared office environment
  • Typically, 8:00 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, with the flexibility to work additional hours as required depending on the number of active projects and their deadlines
  • Minimal travel is required
