DEFINITIONTo drive and operate a transportation system vehicle safely and efficiently in the transport of senior citizens, disabled individuals and the general public; to assist passengers in and out of the vehicle safely; to maintain records and reports of trip information as required; and to perform other related departmental duties and responsibilities as required. SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISEDReceives general supervision from the department head, management staff, or assigned supervisory staff.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSDepending upon assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: Operates a transportation system vehicle using established routes and schedules; picks up and discharges passengers at designated stops; modifies routes as directed based on passenger cancellations, transfers, add-ons, no-shows, or other changing service needs. Provides safe, courteous and efficient transportation services for senior citizens, disabled individuals and the general public to and/or from their residences or other settings to a variety of additional designated locations. Takes appropriate steps to ensure the safety of passengers with severe physical, psychological or developmental difficulties while in vehicle; aids in securing individuals with varying physical and psychological abilities safely in their seat with seatbelt restraints ensuring safe transportation while in motion. Assists passengers safely on and off the vehicle; assists passengers in carrying packages, and possessions as necessary. May operate wheelchair lift device when necessary to board and disembark passengers; may be required to accompany passengers on lift ensuring passenger safety while boarding and disembarking; ensures that all wheelchair brakes are locked while lift is in motion, positioning wheelchairs within vehicle and securing them inside the vehicle with the proper safety restraints. Ensures all ambulatory devises are safely secured and/or stowed while on board transportation vehicle at all times. Collects fares from passengers and maintains related records. Maintains order of passengers while en route; resolves disputes and documents severe incidents and/or disciplinary cases. Administers First Aid and CPR as necessary. Conducts daily vehicle safety and maintenance inspections; records and reports all deficiencies needing repair; delivers and picks up vehicle to / from maintenance shop; fuels vehicle and maintains the cleanliness of vehicle exterior and interior. Maintains a variety of records, logs and reports as required. Performs related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Experience: Two years of experience driving and operating a bus, transit van or other commercial passenger vehicleORAt at least six months experience driving and operating a school bus. Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent. Additional Requirements: Possession of a valid Class B California driver's license with a Passenger Endorsement.ORPossession of a valid Class B California driver's license with a School Pupil Activity Bus (SPAB) Certification. A valid CPR and First-Aid Certificate A safe driving record.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDSKnowledge of: California State Motor Vehicle Code as it relates to the operation of vehicles for transporting passengers. Streets, highways and landmarks in the County and related areas. Safe driving practices. First Aid and CPR practices and procedures. Proper operation of a wheelchair lift ramp and procedures for safely securing power wheelchairs, scooters, manual wheelchairs, and other ambulatory devices within vehicles for transportation. Basic record-keeping techniques. Basic arithmetic and cash-handling skills. Ability to: Understand, interpret and apply pertinent federal, state and local laws, rules and regulation, and County / departmental policies and procedures as they apply. Understand and apply transportation system policies and procedures. Understand the special requirements associated with the transport of senior and disabled citizens. Exercise sound judgment and extreme caution while operating a transport vehicle. Safely and properly operate lift-equipped vehicles and specialized equipment / devices. Safe and proper installation of vehicle tire chains during inclement weather as necessary to ensure safe transit. Recognize and report malfunctions and safety hazards in transportation vehicles and equipment. Operate a two-way radio, use computer systems effectively, generate transportation schedules, answer telephones, retrieve messages from answering systems, and take messages when necessary. Understand and carry out oral and written instructions with minimal supervision. Maintain valid California certification for the operation of the vehicles that may be assigned. Read and interpret maps; Access maps utilizing a computer or other appropriate electronic devices. Remain calm in emergency situations. Communicate clearly and concisely, in both oral and written form. Understand and execute written and oral instructions. Provide professional and courteous customer service to passengers and the general public at all times. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the performance of assigned departmental duties. Maintain records, reports, and logs related to vehicle maintenance and the transportation of passengers. Participate and pass all DOT drug/alcohol testing requirements and be subject to the County DMV pull program. TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS Incumbent drives and operates transportation passenger vehicles on surface streets. Worker may be exposed to traffic hazards, air contaminants, adverse weather conditions, varying temperature and noise extremes, wetness, humidity, fumes, dusts, odors, pathogens, vibration, and violence. TYPICAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTSRequires the mobility and stamina to drive vehicles for extended periods of time. Requires the ability to sit, walk, stand, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, push, crawl, crouch, twist, and reach while performing work; lift and/or move up to 50 pounds frequently and up to 100 pounds occasionally; assist individuals with varying physical and psychological abilities in and out of a vehicle; secure individuals with varying physical and psychological abilities safely in their seat with seatbelt restraints, perform grasping and fine manipulation, handle, feel or operate objects, tools and controls. Daily duties require visual acuity, sound perception and discrimination, and oral communications capability.THE SELECTION PROCESSAll interested applicants must complete and submit a job application including any required supplemental questionnaires, and attach any required documentation.
