Senior Aerospace Engineer (6 month contract)
POSITION SUMMARY
Virgin Orbit (VO) is seeking a new member for our team to serve as a
Senior Aerospace Engineer (6 month contract)
. If you join us in this position, you will assist in the design and analysis of structural and mechanical systems for the LauncherOne small satellite launch program. The Sr. Mechanical Engineer will develop designs for primary and secondary structures, high pressure/ cryogenic plumbing, aero surfaces, and mechanisms; under the direction of Structures Engineering Management. The ideal candidate must have current and/or recent hands-on experience with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Computer Aided Design (CAD). Additionally, they should demonstrate a strong background in mechanical design, analysis, test, and manufacturing. This role is for a hands-on person with great attention to detail and excellent people skills.
This is a 6 month contract position at our rocket factory in beautiful Long Beach, California.
YOUR PART OF THE MISSION
- Design the vehicle structural elements and configurations in concert with other engineering disciplines
- Design of plumbing systems with attention towards low cost manufacturing
- Assistance in the development of manufacturing, integration, and test processes and procedures
- Launch and mission operations support

- Constantly learn new things—and share them with your team members
- Performs other duties as assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering
- 5+ years of experience in an aerospace manufacturing environment
- Strong expertise in Finite Element Analysis using industry tools such as FEMAP, PATRAN, NASTRAN, and ANSYS
- Strong skills in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) drafting skills
- Knowledge of the design, analysis, fabrication, and test of composite and metallic structures
PREFFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience in NX/Teamcenter
- Experience in low cost commercial space system ventures
- Experience with space launch vehicle design
- Ability to thrive as a ‘one person team’
- Ability to add something unique and positive to our team
- Generally high level of all-around awesomenes
- Passion for space exploration and a firm belief in the utility of affordable access to space
- Ability and desire to perform in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment

Salary Range: $50.00 - $70.00 Total Rewards at Virgin Orbit:
