If this is you, we invite you to apply for our Racial Equity & Justice Policy Coordinator position. This is a Regular, Full-Time (1.0 FTE) position, that will support our Racial Equity and Justice (REJ) Program.

Some of what you'll do:


  • Coordinate internal and external Department efforts to achieve multiculturalism and racial equity in all policies, practices, and procedures.
  • Perform strategic outreach and engagement to advance racial equity & justice policy priorities.
  • In collaboration with partner organizations, agencies, and jurisdictions, the position will help implement racial equity and justice lens to Health in All Policies and decision-making across Pierce County.
  • The position will represent the Department to local, state, and federal officials to advance racial equity and justice policy priorities.
  • This position works in close collaboration with the Department’s Policy & Government Relations Coordinator on initiatives, such as the Legislative Team and other related policy work.
  • Coordinate overall project management for policy development efforts.

What you bring to the table

  • Knowledge of communications principles and presentation techniques for culturally diverse audiences.
  • Knowledge of strategies and methods necessary to facilitate, negotiate and implement high level policy development related to health promotion.
  • Knowledge of evidence-based policy, systems and environmental change strategies.
  • Knowledge of effective health promotion education principles, practices and methods.
  • Knowledge of and skill in supervising, leading, coaching and mentoring teams of professional and technical staff.
  • Skill in researching, analyzing, recording, and assessing data, i.e., statistical data, health literature, marketing & educational strategies, grant applications, budgets, etc.
  • Skill in organizing work activities to meet established objectives.
  • Skill in project management and development.
  • Skill in communicating effectively in writing and orally to individuals and groups to present information, collaborate, facilitate and negotiate strategies to accomplish work goals.
  • Ability to establish and maintain collaborative relationships with a diverse population of community members, media personnel, businesses, schools, community-based agencies, organizations and departmental staff.
  • Ability to build strong alliances and attempts to find common ground with a wide range of stakeholders; engages in cross-functional activities and collaborates across boundaries.
  • Persuade others and builds consensus through a process of give and take; gains cooperation from others to obtain information and accomplish goals; facilitates win/win situations.
  • Identify and analyze problems, weighing the relevance and accuracy of information; generates and evaluates alternative solutions before making a recommendation.

Who should apply

Master's degree and four years of relevant experience in community health, environmental, education, or other relevant field, or equivalent combination of education and experience to perform the essential functions of work.

Equivalencies include:

  • Bachelor's degree and six years of relevant experience
  • Associate's degree and eight years of relevant experience
  • Less than an Associate's degree and ten years of relevant experience
Required Certifications and Licensure
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and an acceptable driver's abstract prior to employment.
Desired
  • Lived experience and/or formalized education around policy-making addressing institutional racism and oppression
  • Strong project management skills and experience for leading collaborative efforts and project planning.
  • Knowledge of grant funding coordination.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

Work Setting:


  • Work is performed almost exclusively indoors in an office environment. Exposure to hazards is limited to those commonly found in government office environments.
  • This position may allow for the option of a hybrid role, working both in the office and remotely.
  • Your office will be set up to provide personal safety, including social distancing, screening, sanitation, disinfection, and masks.
Physical Demands:
  • Work may involve occasional physical demands such as lifting and carrying 25 - 50 lbs
Tools and Equipment:
  • Duties require the use of standard office furniture and equipment (e.g., desk, filing cabinet, computer, printer, telephone, fax machine, copy machine, etc.)
Travel:
  • Local and regional travel may be required to complete work with partner organizations, agencies, and jurisdictions.
  • Driving a vehicle requiring a license.
When public health responds to an emergency you may be assigned duties that are outside your regular job description. This may involve responding at any time, including nights and weekends, with possible deployment to locations other than the department.
