Please note the following requirements:
- Minimum of 1 year of experience underground
- Prior mine rescue or emergency experience/training is preferred but not required. This includes:
- Good knowledge of maps, escape/travel ways (can read maps)
- Have knowledge of mine gases and how to use and calibrate a gas meter
- Knowledge of ventilation and direction of travel in conjunction with normal ventilation and reversed ventilation
- Must possess leadership skills and be able to react appropriately in stressful and emergency situations
- Must be able to be fit for duty and able to respond to emergencies at all times 24 hours a day – 7 days a week
- Be able to work well with others as a team
- Must lead by example at all times even in workforce: leading your crew with safety, preparedness, and follow all policies and standards
- Must be able to pass an initial Mine Rescue physical and annually thereafter.
- Attend monthly training (typically 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.). Every effort will be made for the training to occur on a scheduled workday;!training may occasionally be scheduled on an off-day.
Under MSHA Part 49, and Nyrstar policy, in the event of an emergency we are mandated to provide two fully equipped teams. Team members must be fully trained in the use of the Drager BG4 closed-circuit breathing apparatus, first aid, gas detection, and procedures to allow mine recovery and search and rescue of miners if the situation were to occur.
Members must be knowledgeable of locations of the workplaces and have a basic understanding of the site escape and ventilation procedures. Ideally, coverage is spread across the current shifts and not loaded up on one particular shift.
Additionally, members are encouraged to consider becoming a member of the Mine Rescue Contest Team if openings occur. Nyrstar participates in two contests annually. Preparation for contests requires additional training sessions and some home study.
