General Laborer Job Description

The Landfill General Laborer will receive regular, daily instruction from the Assistant Operations Managers. The Landfill General Laborer will follow the established policies and procedures of Pawnee Waste, in the execution of her/his duties, including adherence to the Pawnee Waste Health and Safety Plan.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Manual labor, including, greasing and maintenance of equipment, moving pumps and hoses, keeping landfill clean and presentable
• Fueling and servicing vehicles, equipment, and machinery
• Cross training on equipment and machinery
• Heavy lifting, moving items from one place to another within the landfill
• Mowing, weeding, and landscaping
• Assisting with dust control
• Answering phone in a professional and enthusiastic manner when needed
• Maintaining the interior of facilities by assisting other employees and departments where needed
• Assisting customers with unloading their vehicles
• Removing debris caused from extreme weather conditions
• Directing traffic at the site as necessary
• Performing work assignments received from superiors, normally without close supervision
• Supporting other staff, particularly landfill and trucking staff, in executing assigned tasks. This includes assistance as required during the absence of other staff due to illness, vacation, or other leave.

Occasionally, other operations duties may be assigned to the Landfill General Laborer, by the Operations Manager, or designate, on a short-duration basis.

The Landfill General Laborer will be expected to comply with all Pawnee Waste plans, policies and procedures, including codes of ethics and behavior, and present a professional and respectful image on behalf of Pawnee Waste to supervisors and employees, Commissioners, stakeholder residents, customers, suppliers and contractors, regulatory and elected officials, and the general public.

SKILLS REQUIRED:

• Knowledge, skill and ability in the maintenance and servicing of the equipment at the work site, or when the equipment is in the shop for repair, servicing and/or maintenance
• Ability to carry out written or oral instructions
• Ability to quickly learn new skills, such as operating equipment safely and able to avoid accidents
• Exhibit a high level of initiative, work performance and responsibility in the operation of equipment and the performance of duties.

COMMUNICATIONS/INTERACTIONS:

The Landfill General Laborer will be expected to interact with and consult daily, with the Operations Manager, and other Pawnee Waste managers and staff, in the execution of her/his assigned responsibilities.

The Landfill General Laborer will have limited interaction with vendors, stakeholder residents, and customer waste generators and hauling contractors.

The Landfill General Laborer will consult with industry peers, from time-to-time, in both informal situations and formal training courses and conferences, to learn, and share knowledge of new techniques and best industry practices.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

• The position requires daily work at a landfill site, in various climactic conditions, ranging from extreme cold to extreme heat.
• There is a risk of exposure to dust, and potentially toxic materials.
• General Laborers to wear all assigned personal protective equipment and maintain same in proper condition for use.
• The position may require occasional overtime or irregular hours on short notice.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

• Compensation commensurate with experience level.

The successful candidate will be required to pass a drug screen, background check, and physical exam after an offer has been extended and prior to being employed.
