Position description
The Director-Communications, Media Relations is a results-driven leader within Mayo Clinic's Communications Department responsible to lead the overall media relations strategy, coordinating the efforts of the enterprise and site-based media relations leaders in support of strategic priorities. Successful candidates should have demonstrated experience in leading media and/or media relations teams and providing media consultation to executive leaders, and have a proven track record of implementing new and novel media approaches.
The department is responsible to build, grow and protect Mayo Clinic’s reputation in a way that shapes the external environment and nurtures the culture to help achieve the mission of the organization. Department functions consist of reputation management including thought leadership and issues/crisis response; client communications and engagement programs; staff engagement; content and channels; government and community engagement; strategy and insights; communications services.
The director provides administrative leadership and direction for a function or client team, and may serve as a key partner to sites, the practice/research/education (shields) and administration. Partners with senior leaders to drive innovation, challenge the status quo and implement solutions and programs to advance priorities. Responsible for ensuring deliverables are met and outcomes achieved. Establishes and maintains strong relationships with both internal and external partners. The director helps to optimize operational performance. Serves as a thought partner and project liaison outside the department at all levels, helping to proactively identify and communicate business issues, coordinate project activities, streamline approaches/methodologies, and share best practices. Stewards the interest of the organization by ensuring strategies are viable.
Fosters an internal culture of positive teamwork and transparency that drives excellent service, quality, diversity, an engaging work environment and overall continuous improvement mindset. Serves as change agent, championing agile ways of thinking to enable teams and individuals to succeed.
Drives excellence in financial management, communication (verbal, written and presentations), business and strategic planning, performance accountability and reporting. Supports department and institutional projects, staff recruitment, policy implementation and budget management.
Qualifications
Requires a master’s degree in a related field plus 5 years of relevant work experience; or a bachelor's degree in a related field plus 7 years of relevant work experience.

Strong written and oral communication skills. Ability to communicate in a way that creates clarity, simplifies messages, and aligns with organizational strategy. Knowledge of channels for communication and the ability to build effective communication and engagement strategies.

M-F, business hours; plus expectation for off hours availability as needed and as is requisite for this type of position. This position includes a combination of remote and on-campus work; preference, though not a requirement, for candidates to be in proximity to one of the following Mayo Clinic campuses: Jacksonville, FL; Phoenix, AZ; or Rochester, MN.
Weekend schedule
No formal weekend hours, though will be expected to take media call and be available to manage media relations needs during off hours as is requisite for this type of position.
